Language Center

The Language Center provides a cross-faculty program of application- and skills-oriented language study for students which is of high standard. Our course program focusses on FHL-students and students from the University of Lübeck.

  • Course overview

    Expertise in a foreign language is a key-skill for all students, who would like to ensure their professional opportunities within Germany as well as throughout the world. The wide range of the Language Center´s courses aims at students, who intend to live abroad as well as international students, who would like to improve their German or English for specific purposes. All of the language courses are held by trained language-lecturers with longtime experience. The Language center´s courses are free of charge. Most of the courses are compulsory elective modules, so that examinations can be performed. Depending on the study regulations and your individual study process you can obtain credit points for these courses.

    The Language Center currently provides the following courses (some courses are not provided every semester):

    • English

      English courses

      English Foundation Course (A2 / 4 SWS): This course aims at students with a certain deficit in English. Students who have problems to follow up an English Course for specific purposes are recommended to brush up their English in this specially setup course. This course enables students to reach level B1 after completing one semester of 4 teaching units per week (presence + online) accompanied by guided intensive self-study.

      Technical English I (B1-B2 / 4 SWS): In this course you will acquire basic Technical English skills relevant for your engineering studies and your professional field. Competences trained in this course are e.g. process descriptions, product descriptions, operating instructions, presentation language and small talk in a professional context. The portfolio examination is skills-oriented and includes a presentation on a specific technical topic.

      Technical English II (B2-C1 / 4 SWS): In this course you will improve your knowledge of Technical English. Skills from Technical English I are expanded and trained on an advanced level. Competences focused on here are communication and discussion skills, e.g. in technical presentations. An additional training focus lies on writing professional and study-related texts. The portfolio examination is skills-oriented and includes a presentation on a specific technical topic.

      Business English I (B2 / 4 SWS): This course is aimed at students of all study fields who want to improve their command of English particularly in a business context. The relevant Business English skills practiced are based on authentic materials (business texts) and case studies. Course topics are e.g. job applications, e-mails, meetings, negotiations, presentations and small talk in a professional context. The portfolio examination is skills-oriented and includes a presentation on a specific business topic.

      Business English II (B2-C1 / 4 SWS): This challenging course is aimed at students of all study fields and builds on previously acquired skills in English for specific purposes (e.g. in our Business English I, Technical English I or a comparable course). Topics include career development, corporate activities, logistics & supply chain management, management in general, strategic marketing, investment and trade. With a strong focus on communicating effectively in business, we will concentrate on expression, fluency and accuracy in speaking and writing and on increasing your expressive power in the English language. The portfolio examination is skills-oriented and includes oral as well as written parts. 

      English for International Certificates (B2-C1 / 3 SWS): This intensive course is aimed at students with a good command of English who intend to take an internationally accepted test certificate like TOEFL, IELTS or various Cambridge Certificates. The course provides you with a thorough, comprehensive preparation on B2/C1 level.

      Scientific Writing (B2-C1 / 1 SWS): In this course you will learn how to organize and compose readable, well-structured scientific papers. You will also acquire the writing skills you need for drafting your thesis or a study-related report.

    • German

      German courses

      German I (A1 / 2 SWS): In this course you will study the basics of German communication in the context of university and everyday life. Practicing the four skills of Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing you will constantly extend your vocabulary and adopt the basic grammar rules. You will learn about Germany, the Germans and their culture.

      German II+III (A2-B1 / 2 SWS): In this course for advanced learners you will extend your vocabulary and your knowledge on grammar systematically. When practicing the four skills of Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing you will learn how to express yourself appropriately in university settings and everyday situations. You will also deepen your knowledge concerning German culture and society.

      German Tutorial: Scientific Writing (B2-C1 / 4 SWS): This course is dedicated to international students participating in German Bachelor programs who want to improve their study performance. The tutorial offers support and consulting throughout the semester as well as guidance in scientific writing.

The current course schedule is to be found here. Students from the University of Lübeck without permission to the Lernraum are asked to contact the Language Center to clarify issues concerning time-schedules, course-registrations, examination-registrations etc..

    The Language Center´s additional services are:

    • In case you visited a language course that is not listed on your report you can receive a certificate of attendance.
    • We offer qualified and individual consultation regarding all linguistic topics.
